The use of hypertext: demonstration of the methods for investigating an epidemic of meningitis

Abstract: The Meningitis Hypertext Case Study is a computer-assisted learning module developed by the Liverpool Epidemiology Programme as part of a comprehensive set of modules and case studies to assist health workers to learn epidemiology. The objectives of the case study are to highlight important concepts in diagnosing an epidemic of meningitis. It has been developed using hypertext software (LINKWAY) which allows interactions with other epidemiological software (EPI INFO) for the analysis of the data. The case stud… Show more

“…Pro ciency in collecting and doing a quick analysis of epidemiological data is certainly among them. However, modern epidemiological practice and teaching have become closely linked with computer-assisted data analysis (Cuevas et al, 1993;Frerichs & Tar, 1989;Macfarlane et al, 1996). Unfortunately, in Nepal, as in most developing countries, there is often a shortage of manpower trained in such computer skills.…”

“…Developing countries are characterized by the lack of expert teachers and up-to-date didactic resources which, in turn, affect the education of physicans, paramedics and community health workers. In this context, CBT and simulation systems have been considered a cost-effective alternative [6][7][8][9][10] as had been experienced by a member of the author's institute using MS-DOS based CBT programs in Uganda [11].…”

“…An aspect of the work is to develop a series of computer modules using hypertext software which can be used for individual or group work. One example is the Meningitis Hypertext Case Study which handles the methodology required to investigate an outbreak of meningitis (Cuevas et al, 1992).…”
