The Use of Focus-Variation Microscopy for the Assessment of Active Surfaces of a New Generation of Coated Abrasive Tools

Abstract: In this paper, the selected results of measurements and analysis of the active surfaces of a new generation of coated abrasive tools obtained by the use of focus-variation microscopy (FVM) are presented and discussed. The origin of this technique, as well as its general metrological characteristics is briefly described. Additionally, information regarding the focus variation microscope used in the experiments -InfiniteFocus ® IF G4 produced by Alicona Imaging, is also given. The measurements were carried out o… Show more

“…Figure also shows the depth over the ablated region but it should be noted that some shrinkage of the profilometric samples occurred due to the glutaraldehyde fixation process. The white regions on the 3D images are missing data points which are the limitation of the device where it becomes difficult to receive reflected light signals from the sample areas which have a high slope angle or large height differences in the ablated region . The average depths of 0.55 ± 0.18 and 0.44 ± 0.16 mm are achieved at 18 and 13 J/cm 2 laser fluence, respectively.…”

“…Unlike confocal microscopy, which is regularly used for biological samples and is based on transmitted light, IFM works on reflected light and can therefore be used routinely in quality control and analysis of wear in material engineering and production processes, e.g. measuring metal parts and corrosion [245,246] as well as paper smoothness [247]. This is aided by the large, robust sample stage suitable for items of up to 20 kg [246].…”

In addition to quality control, IFM has been used for the comparison of toolmarks in a forensic context [248,249] as well as the analysis of archaeological and anthropological samples [250][251][252][253][254][255][256] and biological samples that are not amenable to confocal microscopy due to their opacity, such as teeth and bones [257][258][259].…”
