All universities in South Africa are encouraged to use a Learning Management System such as Blackboard to facilitate blended learning. Despite, the availability of Blackboard at one university of technology in the country, some lecturers and students prefer utilising WhatsApp for teaching and learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate students and lecturers' perspectives about learning and teaching using WhatsApp at a university in South Africa. The study was done using a qualitative case study within an intepretivist paradigm. It was guided by Garrison, Anderson and Archer's Community of Inquiry as a theoretical framework. Sixteen students and two lecturers who heavily use WhatsApp were purposively selected to participate in semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The study found that lecturers use WhatsApp not only for communication purposes, but to foster collaborative learning among students. Although students noted some limitations which they experience when using WhatsApp, they preferred the social media to blackboard. The study concludes that although WhatsApp is response to students' needs, it does not adequately prepare students to graduate with digital literacy skills expected by the Department of Education in the country.

By the research and development (R&D) method designed by Nicolas Guichon (2007)), this scientific paper lists and describes the features of the free WhatsApp Messenger apps version 2.20.193.9 (released by WhatsApp Inc.) which is then analyzed using the theory of a language laboratory system made by Alfred S. Hayes for later analysis results are used to develop a virtual language laboratory manual. The purpose of this paper is to find out the features of the Whatsapp Messenger version 2.20.193.9 application that can be used for virtual language laboratories and also to develop its manual. Based on the results of the analysis that the author has done, the features that can be used for virtual language laboratories are the chat group, message, voice message, voice call, voice-video call, document delivery (voice document, video, text). The results of this study will be used for the development of the virtual language laboratories manual and are also expected to a topic of discussion among researchers and practitioners in the field of foreign language education and teaching.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemanfaatan mobile instant messaging (MIM) WhatsApp terhadap self efficacy dan kemampuan kognitif siswa pada materi Hukum Newton. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah non-equivalent control group design. Penelitian ini menggunakan subyek siswa SMAN 9 Bandar Lampung kelas XI MIPA 1 sebagai kelas kontrol dan kelas XI MIPA 2 sebagai kelas eksperimen yang berjumlah masing-masing 30 siswa pada Semester Ganjil Tahun Ajaran 2018/2019. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah independent sample t-test untuk uji parametrik dan Mann-Withney U-test untuk uji non parametrik. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, diperoleh bahwa rata-rata post-test self efficacy pada kelas eksperimen 80,1 sedangkan pada kelas kontrol 67,06. Rata-rata postest kemampuan kognitif siswa pada kelas eksperimen 81,33 dan pada kelas kontrol 73,66. Perbedaan kedua kelas baik pada self efficacy dan kemampuan kognitif sangat signifikan dimana nilai kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan nilai kelas kontrol. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa self efficacy dan kemampuan kognitif siswa yang memperoleh pembelajaran berbantuan MIM WhatsApp lebih baik dibandingkan dengan kelas yang tidak menggunakan WhatsApp.
