The use of DTA in the analysis of silver (II) oxide for carbonate impurity

Abstract: A rapid and reliable method is described in which quantitative differential thermal analysis is used to anatyse for silver carbonate in the presence of silver(II) oxide. The method is applicable quantitatively above 2070 silver carbonate and semiquantitatively above 5 700.

“…TG samples were run in platinum boats over a temperature range of 298 to 753 K (25~176 at a heating rate of 20 K/min in a flowing atmosphere (50 cm3/min) of dry argon. Because the decomposition temperatures of AgO and AgsCO3 overlap, neither can be determined in the presence of the other by TG alone (10,11); therefore, an EGA method using a Hewlett-Packard 5710-A Gas Chromatograph (GC) was developed for determination of the evolved CO2 from the AgsCO3 decomposition. Samples for GC analysis were placed in a specially designed Pyrex vessel (Fig.…”

“…The endothermic decomposition of Ag2C03 at 470 °C was sufficiently separated from the 410 °C exotherm of AgO to permit quantitative measurements of Ag2C03 in mixtures containing more than 20% and semiquantitative measurements above 5% (19). Diluting quartz with montmorillonite (S1O2 5-40%) and planimetering the 573 °C -ß quartz analysis to ±1% (175).…”

“…A constant-pressure, variable-volume apparatus was developed (440) and applied to several inorganic compounds. Equipments on the more conventional thermal conductivity detection also have been described (19,441). Combined DTA-EGD has been applied to CuSCU-Sh^O, CaC204-H20, and MgH2 decompositions (125) and, in the case of the last compound, two enormous peaks (H2 retardation) were obtained while the single DTA peak was quite small.…”
