“…Cases were included if skin staplers had been used to close linear gastrointestinal incisions. Dogs undergoing intestinal anastomosis were excluded from this evaluation because they were included in a separate study . Dogs with additional gastrointestinal surgeries performed at least 3 weeks apart were included and considered to have undergone 2 separate, independent surgical events.…”

“…All gastrotomies were closed in 2 layers; the mucosa and submucosa layers were closed with a continuous pattern, monofilament absorbable sutures (polyglyconate [Maxon; Covidien], Glycomer 631 [Biosyn; Covidien] or polydioxanone [PDS, Ethicon Johnson & Johnson, Cornelia, Georgia]), and the seromuscular layers were closed with skin staplers in appositional fashion. The technique for closure of the enterotomies has been described previously . Two stay sutures are placed at the ends of the incision, and the assistant applies a slight traction, allowing the surgeon to apply the skin staples 3‐4 mm apart (Figure A‐C, Supporting Information Video).…”

“…In vivo dog studies demonstrate that stapled anastomosis are performed more rapidly than hand‐sewn anastomosis with similar bursting strengths . Disposable staplers were used for intestinal anastomosis in 63 dogs in a recent clinical review, and there was a dehiscence rate of only 4.5% . Linear GI incisions were closed in 333 dogs, with a dehiscence rate of rate of only 1.2%.…”

However, the staples anchored a linear foreign body in two cases.…”
