The Use of Cryotherapy for Papilloma and Early Laryngeal Cancers

Abstract: The use of adjuvant cryotherapy in the treatment of early glottic cancer does not improve the rate of carcinoma recurrences. Additionally, cryotherapy does not result in a statistically significant increase in the duration of disease-free period for laryngeal papillomatosis patients, although the observed increase may be clinically important.

“…The morbidity of RRP is exceedingly high due to the recurrent nature of the disease and a lack of satisfactory treatment options. RRP symptom management is limited to repeated surgical procedures to remove lesions [ 11 , 12 ]. Procedures are uncomfortable, costly, and inconvenient for patients, and can injure and scar vocal fold tissues, which further impairs voice production [ 11 ].…”

“…Other methods that could be considered for debulking a tumour like this are C02-laser, a micro-debrider and cryotherapy [ 6 , 19 , 20 ]. In this case, micro-debrider surgery and cryotherapy were dismissed due an increased risk of trauma to surrounding tissues and a lack of evidence, respectively [ 20 ]. We chose coblation because it has a long track record as an operative modality, is widely available, and allows a bloodless field [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Although emphasis has been placed on cryotherapy as a treatment for laryngeal cancer, several studies address the success of the use of cryotherapy as a treatment for papillomatosis. 86,90 Cryotherapy has the potential to be a medical treatment for laryngeal diseases resulting in minimal scarring and optimal postoperative voice quality and is therefore an important topic for future research. For one, future research should continue to look at the healing process of cryotherapy, exploring the healing environment produced and how it results in minimal scarring.…”
