The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Abstract: The present survey provides current data describing the use of CAM in patients with CF and adds to the increasing body of evidence about CAM use in the United States. Further research is needed to explore the relationship and effectiveness of specific types of CAM practices and their benefits on symptom relief and overall quality of life of CF patients.

“…Although pain in adults with CF is associated with lower QOL [5][6], [11], increased risk of exacerbation [6] and decreased survival [6], [12], it is often neglected by the treating physicians [5], [8]. In addition to drug treatment, many patients with CF use non-drug treatments and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) [5][6], [8], [13][15] including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). However, this type of treatment has never been evaluated in CF.…”

The majority (53%) used dietary supplements followed by mind-body medicine (MBM) (49%) and manipulative therapies (14.5%).…”

[16][17][18][19] Meditative movement, most commonly tai chi, yoga, and qi gong, incorporates: focus of the mind; movements, usually slow, relaxed, flowing and choreographed; a focus on breathing to rest the mind, which also "energizes" the body; and a deep state of physical and mental relaxation.…”
