The use of chitosan oligosaccharide to improve artemisinin yield in well-watered and drought-stressed plants

Abstract: IntroductionArtemisinin is a secondary metabolite well-known for its use in the treatment of malaria. It also displays other antimicrobial activities which further increase its interest. At present, Artemisia annua is the sole commercial source of the substance, and its production is limited, leading to a global deficit in supply. Furthermore, the cultivation of A. annua is being threatened by climate change. Specifically, drought stress is a major concern for plant development and productivity, but, on the ot… Show more

“…The leaf hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) content was determined using the method previously described by Velikova et al (2000) with the modifications described by García-García et al (2023b). Each measurement was the average of five plants (n = 5) at 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after the treatments described in Section 2.3.…”

“…Elicitation is the most common and practical strategy to improve the secondary metabolite profile (Aguirre-Becerra et al, 2021;Kam and Yap, 2020). In this sense, the search for elicitors that increase ROS generation could be promising to enhance artemisinin content, since there is strong evidence that ROS and artemisinin levels are related (Aftab et al, 2011(Aftab et al, , 2010Feng et al, 2009;Ferreira, 2007;García--García et al, 2023b;Guo et al, 2010;Kam and Yap, 2020;Lei et al, 2011;Mannan et al, 2010;Poulson and Thai, 2015;Salehi et al, 2019;Wallaart et al, 2000).…”

“…Furthermore, chitosan was selected as an elicitor to enhance the production of phenolics and diterpenoids in plants under water deficit [17]. The effects of chitosan on drought stress have been used in various plants such as maize [18], Artemisia annua [19], Sorghum [20], and Salvia [21,22], and also, in most cases, it reduces the effects of drought stress.…”
