The use of bird feathers for indicating heavy metal pollution

Abstract: Feather material has been investigated as suitable indicating tissue for heavy metal pollution. At least three different routes are described through which trace metal content in the feathers can increase: internal deposition during growth, contamination by the bird's secretion and outside contamination. As mercury is only deposited during feather growth, the feather burden reflects the internal contamination of the bird. Internal deposition of zinc appears to be well regulated in the shaft but concentrations d… Show more

“…Glaucous-winged gulls in the Aleutians are generally resident, and do not migrate (Verbeek 1993), making them ideal because they represent local or regional (Aleutian Island) exposure. For most birds, feathers and eggs can serve as an indicator of internal contamination (Goede and deBruin 1984, 1986; Furness et al 1986; Burger 1993). These levels can then be used to assess whether there are potential reproductive deficits in populations (Burger 1994).…”

“…Feathers can serve as an indicator of internal contamination (Burger 1993; Goede and deBruin 1986; Furness et al 1986) and can then be used to assess whether there are potential behavioral or reproductive deficits in populations (Burger and Gochfeld 2001). Laboratory studies have been used to identify the levels of metals that result in adverse impacts on the behavior, physiology, or reproductive success of birds.…”

“…Subsequently, absorbed metals are delivered to target or storage organs or sequestered in feathers (Braune 1987; Lewis and Furness 1991) or other tissues. In some environments, feathers are susceptible to increased metal accumulation by external contamination (Goede and deBruin 1986; Rose and Parker 1982), although such external contamination might be much less in remote areas, and vigorous washing removes significant external contamination.…”

“…High amount of absorbed metals are eliminated with feathers during molting and the high concentrations found there suggest that is a very important route of metal elimination (Furness et al 1986;Honda et al 1986;Lewis and Furness 1991). Goede and De Bruin (1986), Burger (1993Burger ( , 1996, Burger and Gochfeld (2000a), and Golden et al (2003) tested bird feathers as an indicator of heavy metals pollution. Relationships between Hg content and molt were studied by Furness et al (1986).…”
