The use of an online learning and teaching system for monitoring computer aided design student participation and predicting student success

Abstract: In this paper we report on the use of a purpose built Computer Support Collaborative learning environment designed to support lab-based CAD teaching through the monitoring of student participation and identified predictors of success. This was carried out by analysing data from the interactive learning system and correlating student behaviour with summative learning outcomes. A total of 331 undergraduate students, from eight independent groups at the University of Surrey took part in this study. The data colle… Show more

“…With attention directed toward technology as a tool to facilitate the transformation of teaching and learning in the 21 st Century, there is a relentless optimism around its potential for educational use (Laurillard 2014;Lund and Smørdal 2006). However, unlike an increasing number of their students who are 'born digital' (Akhtar et al 2015) and have the ability to find almost anything, anytime, anywhere, many teachers need to be supported to develop their understanding of online literacy, in particular, how teaching and learning changes when new technologies are used (Hökkä and Eteläpelto 2014;Beetham and Sharpe 2013).…”

“…However, some issues have been determined from online learning such as instance number of student using the system is not encouraging and the impact of the performance of student will affect their knowledge (Akhtar, Warburton, & Xu, 2017). One known networking academy has developed an innovative global education initiative that delivers information and communication technology skills to help meet this growing demand while improving career and educational opportunities for students around the world.…”
