The use of an alternative feed additive, containing benzoic acid, thymol, eugenol, and piperine, improved growth performance, nutrient and energy digestibility, and gut health in weaned piglets

Abstract: This research evaluated a feed additive (benzoic acid, eugenol, thymol, and piperine), associated or not with colistin, in weaned piglets feeding. The parameters evaluated were growth performance, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients, diarrhea incidence, intestinal morphology, relative weights of digestive organs, microbial diversity, and the percentages of operational taxonomic units of microorganisms in the cecum content of pigs. One-hundred and eight crossbred piglets (5.3 ± 0.5 kg) were u… Show more

“…Considering the performance of piglets throughout the nursery phase, benzoic acid and combinations with EO at the levels of 3 g/kg and 4 g/kg favored a greater final BW in the piglets, similarly to what was observed for the piglets receiving the antibiotic. Their performance was improved, possibly due to better nutrient digestibility, as well as increased bacterial diversity and richness caused by organic acid and the essential oils [53,[56][57][58].…”

“…In the present study, twenty-one organic compounds were detected in HAnS, including thymol, eugenol, fatty acids, and vitamin E (Figure 1). Previous studies (Silva-Júnior et al, 2020;Wall et al, 2014) provided solid evidence that several of the compounds in HAnS improve growth performance and feed intake and increase livestock immune response.…”

“…These findings were considered to be a result of the incidence of diarrhea and the intestinal microbial environment, whereas the LP diet with MFA improved nutrient digestibility by various actions. EO can stimulate and increase digestive enzyme secretions and gastric or intestinal motility [ 52 , 53 ]. The addition of protease can cleave protein chains more readily, increasing the ATTD of CP [ 44 ].…”
