The use of alternative therapies by children with asthma: A brief report

Abstract: A substantial proportion of children with asthma who attend paediatric clinics use alternative therapies. Paediatricians should be aware of this and be prepared to discuss alternative therapies with parents. This may facilitate more open doctor-patient relationships and better management of children's asthma.

“…These pediatric studies indicate that between 11% and 21% of children use some form of A/CT. For children with specific health conditions, A/CT use varies: 55% of children with asthma [18], 31% with cancer [19], and 66% with cystic fibrosis [20]. Adolescent A/CT use spans an even wider range, depending greatly upon how A/CTs were defined and what population was studied, from 2% of adolescents in one population-based study [16] to 70% of homeless teens [10].…”

However, previous studies (6,8,12,15) show that the majority of CAM users also receive traditional medical therapy and would likely be properly represented in our sample.…”

“…Other authors [2] studied the nature and prevalence of alternative therapies used by 51 children aged 1-6 years with asthma who were admitted to the Women's and Children's Hospital in South Australia. From the analysis of questionnaires completed by parents, approximately 55% of children used complementary therapies for asthma management, mostly relaxation exercises, massage, diet therapy and vitamins.…”
