Wired drill pipe (WDP) has been used in over 100 wells worldwide to provide high-bandwidth communications between the surface and tools deployed in the wellbore. Such enhanced access to real-time data improves decision making, opens the door for advanced drilling processes such as automated drilling, and gives visibility to downhole conditions where never before possible.WDP creates a high-speed drillstring network at the wellsite that operates independently of drilling fluid, enabling communications for the widest range of drilling applications and conditions. In addition, the network provides real-time memory/wireline-quality data not only from tools in the bottom hole assembly but also from tools that may be arrayed at intermediate points along the drillstring. These and other attributes of a drillstring network are compelling given the drilling challenges encountered in today's wells. Indeed, the numerous deployments in which wired drillpipe has been used have demonstrated that the network provides significant value to the drilling process in terms of drilling safety, efficiency and performance.Learnings and experience gained across these operations have driven the development of a new and enhanced version of the drillstring network. This second generation high-speed drillstring network includes improvements to the design of wired drillpipe, a new generation of distributed network electronics, and a graphical surface network controller. These enhancements and their utility with respect to improving drilling processes are discussed here in detail.These improvements are designed to create a more stable, robust and reliable network system. Further, the enhanced graphical surface controller expands network diagnostic capabilities and reduces the learning curve for network users. Revisions to the wired drillpipe design will result in lower cost of ownership and more cost-effective deployment of the technology, further improving the value the system can provide.

The first use of wired pipe in BP was in early pre-commercial field trials in seven Oklahoma wells in 2004to 2005(Reeves et al, 2006. IntelliServ commercialized its networked drillstring or wired pipe with full connectivity to 3 rd party downhole tools in early 2007.BP field trialed the commercial version of wired pipe with a comprehensive suite of BHI's Loging While Drilling (LWD) tools, Measurment while drilling (MWD) and AutoTrak rotary steerable on two Wamsutter (Wyoming) wells in 2007. These wells achieved a number of "industry firsts" including the first use of IntelliServ along string pressure measurements and the first use of real-time high resolution wellbore imaging while drilling.Since then, BP has deployed wired pipe commercially on more than 14 wells in 4 additional locations (Trinidad, North Sea, Colombia, and Deep Water Gulf of Mexico) representing a good cross section of drilling conditions and challenges (including wellbore stability, hole cleaning, BHA vibrations, formation pressure measurements in depleted zones, complex geology and challenging directional requirements). This paper is a summary of the above experiences. It includes a discussion of the challenges and solutions in area such as hardware modifications (e.g. wiring top drives, reamers, jars) deployment, logistics, reliability, pipe handling and other operational modifications, surface connectivity and dataflow to shore. The bulk of this paper discusses wired pipe enabled applications while drilling. Introduction:BP has been involved with IntelliServ since its early days (Jellison et al, 2003). Early field trials of wired pipe were conducted on BP wells in Oklahoma (Reeves et al, 2006). The objective of these trials was to test the mechanical and network reliability of the system. Attempts to use the real-time data were limited. In 2007, two wells in Wamsutter (Wyoming) were used for the "Wired Pipe enabled applications" field trial. The focus of these trials was to explore what the types of real-time applications that could be enabled by the additional data available while running wired pipe, or in others words "what can we do with wired pipe that we can't do with mud pulse". Although the Wamsutter wells themselves were not thought to be sufficiently challenging or high cost to warrant the use of wired pipe on a commercial basis, they did offer the opportunity to test a number of applications which were thought to be of significant use in other more challenging and higher cost locations (mostly offshore).

Because of the existence of cuttings in the flow, the pressure loss in the wellbore can increase significantly. Minimization of the flow pressure loss greatly benefits the drilling process. This work investigates the most important factors to the pressure loss in the wellbore during the hole cleaning process. It is found that, for the solid–liquid, two-phase flow, the fluid flow rate is not always proportional to annular pressure loss as the single-phase flow. The mechanisms behind this effect are studied, and a mechanistic model based on the solid–liquid, two-phase flow is proposed to simulate the hole cleaning process and predict the critical fluid flow rate, which gives the minimum pressure loss in the wellbore. The effect of the inclination angle, fluid rheological parameters, annulus geometry, and the rate of penetration on the critical value are investigated by using the proposed model. Results show that the critical flow rate value increases as the inclination angle increases under 60° and decreases once the inclination angle goes beyond 60°. The critical flow rate increases as the fluid viscosity and the wellbore geometry increase. This proposed model can be used to minimize the pressure loss in the wellbore in the given operational conditions and optimize the drilling parameters.
