The Use of Along String Annular Pressure Measurements to Monitor Solids Transport and Hole Cleaning

Abstract: For many years the oil industry has been limited by the fact that measurements are only taken at the BHA and at surface during well construction operations. This has led to a reliance on modeling to help understand the measurements made and to understand the conditions in regions of the wellbore that are not being directly monitored. The advent of sensors that can be deployed along the drill string has created an opportunity, for the first time, for operators to observe the downhole environment not just at the… Show more

“…These cases have underscored the need for improved diagnostic methods that better leverage the connectivity between networked devices in situ to assist identification of such faults and reduce the time required by troubleshooting activities. • Application of multiple sensors in positions along the drillstring has highlighted the need for better absolute accuracy of sensors, to reduce postprocessing effort required to understand data quality and their implications (see Coley and Edwards 2013).…”

“…Some will be the subject of their own papers, for example, the use of along string annular pressure measurements is discussed in more detail by Coley and Edwards (2013). This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the key applications as experienced on the subject wells.…”

“…Both field applications and laboratory studies show that cuttings in the wellbore can significantly affect the pressure gradient (Coley and Edwards, 2013;Zhang et al, 2014). The effects of cuttings on ECD are contributed by three aspects: the mud hydrostatics pressure, the solid phase in the mud, and the frictional pressure loss in the annulus (Yao et al, 2022).…”
