The Use of Acrylate Polymers in Dentistry

Abstract: The manuscript aimed to review the types of acrylate polymers used in dentistry, as well as their chemical, physical, mechanical, and biological properties. Regarding their consistency and purpose, dental acrylate polymers are divided into hard (brittle), which includes acrylates for the production of plate denture bases, obturator prostheses, epitheses and maxillofacial prostheses, their repairs and lining, and soft (flexible), which are used for lining denture bases in special indications. Concerning the com… Show more

“…From the existing literature, we identified a small library of such monomers with demonstrated suitability for VP. ,, From this, we selected trimethylammonium ethyl methacrylate (TMAEMA) as a preliminary monomer due to the presence of an ionic quaternary ammonium group, homopolymer elasticity, and efficient photopolymerization rate demonstrated by structurally similar monomers in aqueous solution . The elasticity of the TMAEMA homopolymer is of particular importance, as it is a stark contrast to the brittleness commonly associated with acrylic polymers …”

“…34 The elasticity of the TMAEMA homopolymer is of particular importance, as it is a stark contrast to the brittleness commonly associated with acrylic polymers. 35 While poly(TMAEMA) is a highly elastic polymer, it displays less than ideal toughness. To increase hardness and create a more durable material, we added N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) as a comonomer.…”

“…Thus, the issue of DMS is very complicated and carried out empirically in most cases. This contributes to a great risk of errors, transforming into complications and aggravation of the patient’s conditions, which is confirmed by the long-term practice of doctors, reflected in the literature [ 60 , 61 ]. Presently, the importance of production routes is a fact that significantly affects the quality characteristics of the fabrication of dental products.…”

“…Much literature has emphasized side effects and immunogenic responses with synthetic polymers. Acrylates are used in baby diapers, and prostheses [ 156 ], but acrylates may lead to serious allergic responses and dermatitis [ 157 ]. Similar kinds of side effects have also been observed with other synthetic polymers and adhesives, including anaphylaxis allergic reaction and arachnoid plasty in the case of fibrin glue [ 158 , 159 ], volitional swallowing, gastrointestinal obstruction, asthma, and allergy with polyethylene terephthalate [ 160 ] and oxidative stress from polypropylene used in mesh surgery [ 161 ].…”
