The Use of a Risk-Based Approach in Safety Issues of Coal Mines

Abstract: The paper contains the analysis of the data on major industrial accidents and occupational injuries at the coal mine industry enterprises of Russia in order to reveal statistically significant correlations between the indicators impacting the accident rate and the employees’ death risk level. As the risk criteria, the values of the methane-air resultant mixtures (MARM) explosions frequency and the frequency of the staff exposure at MARM explosions in the mines (observed levels of personal risks) are taken. The… Show more

“…It should be noted that the traditional employee protection systems in place at the industrial site (PPE, multifunctional safety systems and mine communication systems) satisfy employees and are not challenged. However, there is a demand for instant communication between employees when performing their work and for better performance of existing communication channels [30][31][32].…”

“…Creating a way to intensify the gas supply of coal seams on the basis of a complex set of works may be the answer to the question of how to reduce the number of human casualties and increase the efficiency of drilling and cleaning operations. Therefore, the intensification of gas emissions from coal seams is an urgent scientific and practical task [ [1], [2]]. Despite the existence of scientific developments, the results of previous studies still do not solve the problem of increasing the gas release of coal seams under the influence of external forces.…”
