The Use of a Nomogram to Visually Interpret a Logistic Regression Prediction Model for Giant Cell Arteritis

Abstract: Nomograms allow integration and synthesis of the relative importance of clinical variables and provide a graphic representation of the odds ratios, values, and confidence intervals of logistic regression prediction models. Although nomograms and prediction rules cannot substitute for clinical judgment, they help objectify and optimize the individualized risk assessments for patients with suspected GCA.

“…Besides, the nomogram established in this study is an efficient tool to help clinical workers' decision-making owing to its user-friendly interface and optimal predictive ability. Similarly, the nomograms based on logistic regression were used to visually interpret the prediction model in several studies ( 19 , 30 , 31 ). However, the present predictive model lacked internal and external validations due to the limited sample size.…”

“…Popular in fields such as oncology and transplantation, nomograms are a powerful way to distill group data to determine the probability of a clinical event occurring in an individual. 15 , 38 , 39 They have been used in ophthalmology to predict outcomes after refractive surgery, [40][41][42][43][44] Descemet stripping automated EK graft preparation, 45 giant cell arteritis management, 46 and uveal melanoma treatment. 47 Given the popularity of PK worldwide, however, it is surprising that few nomograms predicting corneal graft failure have been studied.…”

“…For every one-unit increase in age, there is a 6% increase in the odds of a positive TABx; for each unit increase in platelets, the odds of a positive TABx increases 0.5%. This concept is better visualized on a nomogram 28…”

“…This concept is better visualized on a nomogram. 28 Some prediction models for TABx require extensive calculations, eg, multiple likelihood ratios. 11 Our user-friendly model has an online spreadsheet to calculate the risk score for the LR and NN models (https://goo.gl/THCnuU).…”
