The Use of a Drilling Model in Simulation, Optimization, and Formation Description

Abstract: A system of equations constituting a drilling model has been developed with the capability to handle all bit, mud and formation types. This model has been used in three application programs: DRLSIM. A bit run time simulation DRLOPT. An optimization program which predicts termination mechanisms and cost per foot for a range of operating conditions. FORMDES. Foot-by-foot drilling data is used to produce drilling resistance, pore pressure and fracture gradient logs.
