The use and effectiveness of high-fidelity simulation in health professions education: current update

Abstract: Over the past 10 years, there has been an increase in the use of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) as a tool to support and enhance learning in health profession programs. In this article, we review the utilization of HFS in biomedical (basic science) courses for health professions students, and we compare its effectiveness to traditional teaching methods. “…Identifying the deficits can help to orientate future planning and clinical interventions. The use of high‐fidelity simulation is one such model that could enhance training in leadership and management situations, as well as encouraging physicians to encounter the unexpected in a high stress, yet safe and controlled environment 30 . Equipping doctors to adapt to uncertainty, particularly in high stress environments, could provide unique skillsets, which would enable doctors to be prepared for the unexpected, in addition to emphasising flexibility, adaptability and resilience in medical training.…”
