“…Considering the criteria for METS recommended by the International Diabetes Federation 9 (waist circumference 80 cm and FPG 100 mg/dl), the prevalence of METS in Brazilian postmenopausal women was 61.4%. All these rates are higher than results reported for women from other Latin America countries by the Collaborative Group for Research of the Climacteric in Latin America 1 . Thus, Brazilian postmenopausal women constitute a population with increased risk for cardiovascular disease.…”

“…We read with great interest the recent manuscript, by the Collaborative Group for Research of the Climacteric in Latin America, on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (METS) and its components in postmenopausal Latin American women 1 . The authors analyzed the prevalence of METS according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP) 2 in a total of 3965 postmenopausal women, aged 45-64 years, and observed a high prevalence of METS, ranging from 28.1% in women aged 40-44 years to 42.9% in those aged 60-64 years.…”

“…La prevalencia de síndrome metabólico es cada vez mayor entre mujeres postmenopausicas no solo en España (Llisterri et al, 2009) sino también en Latinoamérica (Royer et al, 2007). Aunque en la actualidad existen diferentes clasificaciones diagnósticas, todas coinciden en reconocer la importancia de la obesidad abdominal o central en el origen y progresión del síndrome metabólico (Després et al, 2008).…”

“…The mechanism behind the role of menopausal risk factors in initiating cardiovascular disease remains unclear [28]. Some studies have been shown that there is no difference in cardiovascular risk factors when comparing pre-menopausal with postmenopausal women [29][30][31][32]. In several studies, the incidences of metabolic syndrome among postmenopausal women were found to be increased in the world [33].…”
