The Urk World : Hibernating Infrastructures and the Quest for Urban Mining

Abstract: This PhD thesis concerns urban mining, an umbrella term for different recycling strategies aimed to recover materials from the built environment. More specifically, it focuses on hibernating urban infrastructures, that is: cables and pipes that have been left behind in their subsurface location after they were disconnected. I term this subsurface urban realm of system rejects the "Urk World". "Urk" is short for "urkopplad", the Swedish word for "disconnected", an abbreviation often found on old infrastructure … Show more

“…The two knowledge areas deal with two inherently different issues of the same problem, which are equally relevant to enable and drive change towards fines valorisation. Addressing such principally different knowledge areas in parallel could provide more value rather than integrating them (Wallsten, 2015) in terms of specific knowledge to facilitate fines valorisation. In-depth knowledge on the present situation concerning fines management is key to initiate changed practices, while knowledge on the environmental implications of fines valorisation is required to initiate process development.…”

“…Many scholars assume that the recycling potential of already existing 'hibernating', urban metal stocks is significant. So called urban mining would help slow the mining of virgin materials [5]. According to a World Economic Forum (WEF) 2019 report, only around 20% of global metals are recycled from scrap and electronic waste [6].…”

“…Background: The research was carried out within the Sustainable Norrköping programme, a four-year (2010-2013) endeavour financed by the Norrköping Development Foundation and addressing different dimensions of urban sustainability (see e.g. Wallsten, 2015). Within the programme, research on municipal strategies and plans for sustainable transportation was conducted.…”
