The Upper Bavarian longitudinal community study 1975–2004. 2. Long-term course and outcome of depression

Abstract: There is a persistent and long lasting impact of depressive syndrome, irrespective of diagnostic status, in the general population. Our results underscore the importance of sub-syndromal depressive syndrome when estimating the risk of future mental disorders and functional impairment in the long-term.

“…As disaster-related psychological sequelae could last for many years [7][8][9], actions should be taken now in order to minimize the possible negative impacts of these sequelae on the children's development. However, past experience in Japan, the Pakistan earthquake, and Hurricane Katrina suggests that chronic medical needs postdisaster are often inadequately managed and can result in increased rates of complications and indirect morbidity after a disaster [44][45][46].…”

“…Studies on the course of these symptoms in the general population show that they may surface weeks or months after traumatic events and often persist for years [7][8][9]. Risk factors such as level of exposure to the event, personal injuries, loss of parents, and forced relocation have been found to be associated with the severity of children's symptoms [3,10].…”

“…These results may help to identify the survivors with an increased risk for either PTSD or psychiatric morbidity. As disaster-related psychological sequelae may last for many years [41,42], actions should be taken to minimize the possible negative impacts. A comprehensive screening program should be established to evaluate the mental health conditions of survivors in earthquake-affected areas at regular intervals, in order to facilitate the early identification of people with mental health problems.…”

“…First, although we focus on midlife (i.e., 40-65 years), many studies included wider age ranges [21, 22]. Second, some studies followed participants for many years (e.g., 8 years [23]; 25 years [24]) which meant that some participants could have been middle-aged at the start of the study and some at the end. Third, very few studies either included only women or presented results separately for men and women.…”
