We present the updated INTEGRAL catalogue of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed between December 2002 and February 2012. The catalogue contains the spectral parameters for 59 GRBs localized by the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS). We used the data from the two main instruments on board the INTEGRAL satellite: the spectrometer SPI (SPectrometer on INTEGRAL) nominally covering the energy range 20 keV−8 MeV, and the imager IBIS (the Imager on Board the INTEGRAL Satellite) operating in the range from 15 keV to 10 MeV. For the spectral analysis we applied a new data extraction technique, developed to explore the energy regions of highest sensitivity for both instruments, SPI and IBIS. It allowed us to analyse the GRB spectra over a broad energy range and to determine the bursts' spectral peak energies. The spectral analysis was performed on the whole sample of GRBs triggered by IBAS, including all the events observed in the period December 2002 to February 2012. The catalogue contains the trigger times, burst coordinates, positional errors, durations, and peak fluxes for 28 unpublished GRBs observed between September 2008 and February 2012. The light curves in the 20−200 keV energy band of these events were derived using IBIS data. We compare the prompt emission properties of the INTEGRAL GRB sample with the BATSE and Fermi samples.

The INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS) has been developed to detect and locate in real time the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) serendipitously observed by INTEGRAL. The IBAS software runs automatically at the INTEGRAL Science Data Centre (ISDC), where the satellite data are received with a delay of only a few seconds. The sky coordinates of the GRBs occurring in the field of view of the IBIS instrument are distributed via Internet in real time. The localizations have a typical uncertainty radius of 2 arcmin (90% c.l.) and in most cases are available within a few tens of seconds after the beginning of the GRB. In ten years of operations IBAS has localized about 90 GRBs, most of which in near real time, and distributed alerts also for other kinds of astrophysical transient events, such as type I bursts from low mass X-ray binaries, flares and bursts from magnetars, and outbursts of Galactic transients. IBAS also provides the light curves for the GRBs detected with the anti-coincidence shield of the SPI instrument. Here I summarize the main properties of the GRBs detected in the field of view of IBIS during the first ten years of the INTEGRAL mission.

INTEGRAL: Science Highlights and Future Prospects

ESA's hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray observatory INTEGRAL is covering the 3 keV to 10 MeV energy band, with excellent sensitivity during long and uninterrupted observations of a large field of view (∼ 100 square degrees), with ms time resolution and keV energy resolution. It links the energy band of pointed soft X-ray missions such as XMMNewton with that of high-energy gamma-ray space missions such as Fermi and ground based TeV observatories. Key results obtained so far include the first sky map in the light of the 511 keV annihilation emission, the discovery of a new class of high mass X-ray binaries and detection of polarization in cosmic high energy radiation. For the foreseeable future, INTE-GRAL will remain the only observatory allowing the study of nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy, including the long overdue next nearby supernova, through high-resolution gamma-ray line spectroscopy. Science results to date and expected for the coming mission years span a wide range of high-energy astrophysics, including studies of the distribution of positrons in the Galaxy; reflection of gamma-rays off clouds in the interstellar medium near the Galactic Centre; studies of black holes and neutron stars particularly in high-mass systems; gamma-INTEGRAL: The International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory, an ESA project with instruments and science data centre funded by ESA member states (especially the PI countries: 150 C. Winkler et al. ray polarization measurements for X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursts, and sensitive detection capabilities for obscured active galaxies with more than 1000 expected to be found until 2014. This paper summarizes scientific highlights obtained since INTEGRAL's launch in 2002, and outlines prospects for the INTEGRAL mission.
