The unmet demand for point-of-care ultrasound among general pediatricians: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract: Background Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a noninvasive bedside tool with many pediatric applications but is not currently a formal part of pediatric training and practice. Formal surveys of general pediatricians regarding POCUS training are lacking. We aimed to quantify the baseline ultrasound experience and training needs of general pediatricians and pediatric residents across different practice settings. Methods In 2020, we sent an online s… Show more

“…Pediatric trainees are interested in obtaining POCUS training during residency and view POCUS as an important skill for their future careers. Our finding is consistent with other needs assessment studies indicating that pediatric residents increasingly demonstrate an interest in POCUS [ 18 , 20 - 23 ]. Upstream of residency training, medical schools are also incorporating ultrasound training into undergraduate medical education [ 14 , 24 - 31 ].…”

“…Similarly, Lewis et al reported a questionnaire aimed to assess the need for introducing a POCUS curriculum to the internal medicine program. Furthermore, Kessler et al investigated residents and students’ selection of the most useful applications of ultrasound in their future clinical practice [ 10 – 16 ].…”

“…Recent studies have shown increased implementation of POCUS skills in various medical elds. However, when comparing pediatric subspecialties with their adult counterparts, POCUS remains relatively unexplored in general pediatric training and education [10]. Several physicians still nd it challenging to understand and use this methodology, despite the advantage of easily examining children with ultrasound, especially using highfrequency probes that provide higher resolution images [10].…”
