This paper discusses the methods that historical sociolinguists can use in order to avoid anachronism. It is argued that there are four practical ways of triggering a sense of scale, both for external variables that correlate with past language use and for the linguistic data that we inherited from past societies: by learning from social and cultural historians, by visiting judicial archives, by making scholarly digital editions, and by using corpus linguistic statistical procedures. The case study focused on here is Portuguese in the Early Modern period, from the sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century. The size of an ideal sample of informants is discussed, based on the demographic history of Portugal. Furthermore, social categories are established relevant in the context of Portuguese cultural history, taking into account the social world that made sense to Early Modern people. Next, I introduce a corpus of Early Modern letters containing a close-to-conversational register, and discuss two case studies. An analysis of spelling variation in the corpus shows the diachronic dialectal spread of a merger of sibilants. The statistical analysis of keywords shows the pervasiveness of register markers as well as some typical uses found in epistolary communication by social actors from different social strata.

En los albores de un cambio lingüístico: factores condicionantes y fases en la inserción del artículo en relativas oblicuas del siglo XVIII DOI 10.1515DOI 10. /zrp-2017 Abstract: Based on a corpus of ego-documents (mainly private letters) from the 18th century, we offer the results of a variationist analysis about the insertion of the article in relative clauses headed by preposition («la casa en (la) que...»). The data show that, despite the remarkable vitality that still enjoys the form without the article (almost categorical in the Golden Age Spanish), several contexts begin to favor the diffusion of the innovative variant in that seminal period. As usual in early stages of language change, the explanatory hierarchy begins with structural factors, several among which are selected as significant by the regression analysis. Nevertheless, the selection of time as well as some distributions in the social and stylistic axes of variation allow us to guess the existence of various phases in this incipient change. The first one, developed throughout the first half of the century, is set up as a spontaneous change from below, at the request of the subaltern classes, the younger people, and the most spontaneous contexts. However, towards the end of the century, this change seems to have been stabilized and even reversed in some way, driven now by the privileged classes, who favor the return to the old variant.Keywords: historical sociolinguistics, syntactic variation, relative clauses, phases of linguistic change, change from below/above, immediacy texts, Spanish, 18th century IntroducciónEl presente artículo versa sobre un fenómeno de variación que cuenta con una cierta antigüedad en la historia del español, como puede comprobarse en los siguientes fragmentos, extraídos de textos cercanos al polo de la inmediatez comunicativa. Los de (1) y (2) corresponden a sendos ejemplos del género epistolar del siglo XVIII a cargo de individuos que escribieron cartas personales desde diferentes lugares de América a sus allegados en España. RESUMEN. Mediante la utilización del paradigma variacionista y el empleo de un corpus integrado por textos de inmediatez comunicativa, mayoritariamente de carácter epistolar, en esta investigación se analiza un caso de la sintaxis particularmente resistente al cambio: la alternancia entre soluciones pronominales (que y, en menor medida, cual) y adverbiales (donde) en las relativas oblicuas locativas desde el siglo XVI hasta la primera mitad del XX. De los tres análisis independientes de regresión de efectos mixtos llevados a cabo, uno por cada periodo (siglos XVI, XVIII y XX), se deriva un avance paulatino, aunque moderado, de las formas pronominales a lo largo de los siglos y la progresiva disminución del adverbio donde. Con todo, algunos factores lingüísticos se revelan especialmente persistentes en la explicación de la variabilidad (semántica, función sintáctica y categoría del antecedente, junto al priming estructural y la sintaxis de la cláusula regente), lo que dificulta la progresión del cambio. Con respecto a los factores extralingüísticos, la frecuencia de los relativos pronominales en los contextos comunicativos más distantes, así como su uso preferente por parte de las élites sociales y las generaciones adultas, muestra que estas formas se han adscrito a lo largo de la historia a los registros más formales y prestigiosos.Palabras clave: Sociolingüística histórica, cambio lingüístico, variación sintáctica, oración de relativo, inmediatez comunicativa, método variacionista, español.ABSTRACT: Based on the principles and methods of variationism in a corpus composed by ego-documents, this study analyses a case of syntax variation that has proved to be particularly resistant to change in Spanish: the alternation between pronouns (que/el cual) and adverbs (donde) in oblique relatives. Of the three independent mixed-effect regression analyses performed, one for each of the periods considered (16th, 18th and 20th centuries), a moderate progression of the pronominal forms throughout the centuries has been observed.
