The unified power flow controller: a new approach to power transmission control

Abstract: ll& paper s h m that the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is able to control both the transmitted real power and, independently, the reactive power flows at the sending-and the recebing-end of the transmission line. The unique capabilities of the UPFC in multiple line Compensation are integrated into a generalized power flow controller that is able to maintain prescribed, and independently controllable, real power and reactive p e r flow in the line. The paper describes the basic concepts of the proposed g… Show more

“…The second inverter primarily provides the real power required by the series inverter but it can also operate as an independent VAR compensator. Therefore the UPFC can control the flow of real and reactive power in the transmission line [1]- [2]. The two VSI's can work independently of each other by separating the DC side.…”

“…An optimal location to install UPFC based on real power flow performance index is given in [3][4][5]. A steady state model of UPFC in terms of power injections is discussed in [6]. UPFC is a versatile device can control the active power and reactive power independently or simultaneously.…”

“…The latest convertible static compensators such as interline power flow controllers, generalized unified power flow controllers, etc., are developed to control multiple transmission lines simultaneously. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) can be used for simultaneous control of the power system parameters (voltage, impedance, phase angle), or any of the above combinations [1,2] as it is a versatile and effective device. This device consist one series converter coordinated with one shunt converter.…”

“…The UPFC is able to control, simultaneously or selectively, all the parameters affecting power flow in the transmission line (voltage, impedance, and phase angle) [8]. It is recognized as the most sophisticated power flow controller currently, and probably the most expensive one.…”
