The uncertainty of innovation: a systematic review of the literature

Abstract: Innovation is defined as a process that is fraught with uncertainty. This article's aim is to diminish lack of knowledge of the factors that create uncertainty in innovation processes. The basic thrust of the present argument is that the potential value integral to innovation may or may not be materialized in the future. Given that the future entails uncertainty, it is reasonable to expect that uncertainty is inherent in every innovation process. Uncertainty results from the fact that, on the one hand, events … Show more

“…Here, we elaborate on making decisions in research and development activities over time and the role of (i) existential and technological uncertainty, and (ii) networking and dynamic inefficiencies. We do not provide an exhaustive list of types and sources of uncertainty in innovation processes (for an extensive literature survey, see Jalonen, 2011). We end with a discussion of the various ways in which policy makers could improve the efficiencies in innovation processes, 'repair' the market for technological research, and take away somewhat of the uncertainties.…”

“…A revisão sistemática da literatura é uma metodologia confiável, rigorosa e auditável para validar e interpretar pesquisas prévias relacionadas a um fenômeno particular de interesse (Jalonen, 2012). Conforme Petticrew e Roberts (2008), uma revisão sistemática deve ser produzida quando uma imagem mais abrangente da evidência em um tópico da área é necessária para direcionar futuros esforços de pesquisa.…”

“…A systems' view of the creative industries and stakeholders' analysis can provide a strategy for these business models. According to Jalonen [16] innovation has significant elements of uncertainty and there is real potential for value creation not to be realised. Teece [14] agrees that capturing the value from innovation is a key element of the business model.…”
