The ultraviolet spectra of size-resolved (benzene)N, N=2–60

Abstract: Photoabsorption spectra of benzene clusters BN containing up to N=60 molecules have been obtained on an N-resolved basis over the B2u region of the spectrum (λ=265–245 nm). The resonant enhanced two-photon ionization of a supercooled cluster beam yields distinctive spectra for each value of N. The energy of the 610 resonance is found to decrease monotonically with increasing N, but at N=50 is still far from condensed-phase values.

“…Some previous studies have already addressed this subject. Representative examples are the spectroscopic works conducted around 1990: the electronic spectroscopy of (benzene) n (n 60) 23,24 and (H 2 O) n À (n ¼ 6-50), 25 and the photoelectron spectroscopy of (H 2 O) n À (n ¼ 2-69), 26,27 (NH 3 ) n À (n ¼ 41-1100), 27,28 X À (H 2 O) n (n ¼ 1-60), 29,30 and X À (CH 3 CN) n (n ¼ 1-55; X = Cl, Br, and I). 31 In recent years, many beautiful experimental results have been reported for large hydrated clusters, such as SO 4 2À -(H 2 O) n (n ¼ 4-40), 32 H þ (H 2 O) n (n 27), [33][34][35] and (H 2 O) n À (n 200), [36][37][38][39] using the coupling of the state-ofthe-art molecular beam sources and optical methods with mass spectrometry.…”
