“…Analysis of the literature [8,16,26,30,44,57,58,70,78,80,86,103,105,110,113] shows that no large series of hydronephrosis with prenatal diagnosis has been published to our knowledge. Most of the cases described in these reports are part of a general review of [57] reported 11 cases of hydronephrosis, although their study was mainly focused on the problems related to shunting of the urinary tract in utero.…”

“…US is a non-aggressive way to determine fetal growth and to display fetal anomalies (3), but the findings are difficult to interprete (3). Anyhow, cystic structures can be differentiated from solid ones (8), but their origin and nature remains to be detected by other diagnostic means (3,7,8).…”

Anyhow, cystic structures can be differentiated from solid ones (8), but their origin and nature remains to be detected by other diagnostic means (3,7,8). The cystic masses found with "real-time" US in the fetus at the 24 th and 34 th week of pregnancy were interpreted as fetal hydronephrosis (2), probably because of low resolution power and scantyness of "gray-scale" sonogram.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, the association of UPJO-related hydronephrosis and twinning has not been previously reported. Only two cases of twins with bilateral hydronephrosis have been published one of which was attributed to UPJO [21,22]. Since these three reports were prior to widespread use of USG, a higher percentage of twins with associated UPJO may actually exist.…”
