The type and Australian species of the red algal genera Liagora and Ganonema (Liagoraceae, Nemaliales)

Abstract: The type and Australian species of the liagoraceous genera Liagora and Ganonema (Rhodophyta: Nemaliales) are described. Twenty-one species are included, comprising 15 of Liagora and six of Ganonema. Five new species, Liagora walkerae, L. kraftii, L. izziae, L. delicatula and Ganonema borowitzkae are described. The new combinations Ganonema pinnatum (Harv.) Huisman, Ganonema samaense (Tseng) Huisman, Ganonema clavatum (Yamada) Huisman and Ganonema megagynum (Børgesen) Huisman are proposed. Liagora cladonioides … Show more

“…Gametophytic plants grew at 1-2-m depths on sandy substrata or coral reefs and were found in late autumn through late spring (October-April). The specimens we examined agreed well with the description by Huisman (2002). Thalli were soft and mucoid, erect from a discoid holdfast, 8-14 cm in height, with one to five lightly calcified main axes (Fig.…”

“…The red algal genus Ganonema (Liagoraceae) currently includes 15 species that are distributed primarily in tropical and warm-water regions in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans (Afonso-Carrillo et al 1998;Ballantine & Aponte 2002;Huisman 2002Huisman , 2006Huisman et al 2004). The genus was established by Fan & Wang (1974) for Liagora farinosa J.V.…”

“…Several recent publications have increased the number of species recorded for the region (e.g. Phillips et aI., 1993;King and Puttock, 1994;Huisman, 1996;Phillips and Huisman, 1997;Phillips, 2000;Huisman, 2001;2002) and many tropical species from the northwest were illustrated in the recent Marine Plants of Australia (Huisman, 2000). However, a comprehensive flora for the region has yet to be produced.…”

“…This subdivision has been flagged many times based on observations of reproductive development (Huisman & Kraft, 1994;Huisman & Wynne, 1998;Huisman, 2002;Huisman & Schils, 2002), and implemented, in part, by the resurrection of Ganonema (Huisman & Kraft, 1994) and Izziella (Huisman & Schils, 2002), but it is yet to be undertaken since DNA sequences for the type of the genus (Liagora viscida)…”
