The Two Faces of Cow’s Milk and Allergy: Induction of Cow’s Milk Allergy vs. Prevention of Asthma

Abstract: Cow’s milk has been consumed by humans for over 5000 years and contributed to a drastic change in lifestyle form nomadic to settled communities. As the composition of cow’s milk is relatively comparable to breast milk, it has for a very long time been used as an alternative to breastfeeding. Today, cow’s milk is typically introduced into the diet of infants around 6 months, except when breastfeeding is not an option. In that case, most often cow’s milk based infant formulas are given. Some children will develo… Show more

“…However, the JECS data suggested an association between early formula milk intake and a reduced risk of cow's milk allergy [36]. Additionally, drinking cow's milk might be associated with a higher risk of developing allergies [37,38]. If the family business is related to milk consumption, the present results may have been affected by the children's amount of milk consumption.…”

“…According to van Neerven, et al (2019), cow's milk allergy in children will primarily result in excessive allergies and immunological tolerance to cow's milk before the age of three to four years. 23 Some data suggests that allergies may play a key role in children with severe asthma, according to Arasi, et al (2019). 24 Many children with severe asthma also have an allergic disease.…”

“…Investigating the mechanisms underlying asthma tolerance is beneficial to exploit new targets to induce stable tolerance and prevent asthma and allergic disease. More than 15 epidemiological studies so far have shown that raw cow milk can reduce the risk of allergic diseases, confirming the tolerance‐inducing effect of intestinal exposure to antigens 5–8 . Based on the classic model of breast milk‐transferred asthma tolerance, 9,10 our previous studies successfully established a mouse model of asthma tolerance by directly feeding ovalbumin (OVA) in early life 11 .…”
