The Tunisian Tourism Business: What We Learn About The European Demand?

Abstract: People from European countries are traditionally the most important sources of tourism for Tunisia. The aim of this paper is to analysis the European tourism demand for Tunisia. we propose a vector autoregression error correction model. The following methodology allows us to analysis the dynamic of Tunisian tourism in both short-term and long-term. Our main results show that the real exchange rate is an important factor explaining long-term overnight stays. A currency depreciation of 10% will increase the numb… Show more

“…Econometric methods are frequently employed for the study of tourist demand (Kamel, Ftiti, & Chaibi, 2015), and to a lesser extent, other multivariate methods are utilised, such as factor analysis; their use is justified as they allow the analysis of various variables simultaneously and do not necessarily try to explain only a single dependent variable.…”

“…There were several external factors that contributed to the failure of Enfidha Airport to achieve its goals of value for money and efficiency. First, the Tunisian economy relied heavily on international tourism particularly from Europe, and the Tunisian government did not design a tourism strategy that could alleviate the risks of any unexpected economic or political crises (Jlassi et al, 2015). The Enfidha Airport began operation on December Ali in 2011.…”

“…In Australia, Brierley (2011) noted that seasonal time series methods (the enhanced transmission system (ETS), the seasonal naïve, SARIMA and damped Holt-Winters) performed equally in terms of accuracy. Kamel, Ftiti and Chaibi (2015) adopted a vector autoregression error correction model in modelling Tunisian tourism and concluded that a favourable real exchange rate allows more overnight stays in the country. The unavailability of useful tourism data (foreign currency exchange rate, tourism receipts and tourism expenditure) and adoption of the multiple currency system in Zimbabwe make this method inapplicable.…”
