The Trifocus Framework and Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Severe Disabilities

Abstract: Effective IPCP in communication intervention considers the learner's characteristics, the knowledge and skills required of communication partners, and effective environmental arrangements to support communication. Future research should include clear participant descriptions, documentation of fidelity measures, and evidence of generalization to support professionals to know when findings are relevant to the individuals they serve.

“…To teach multimodal systems, communication partners must augment vocal input with objects, contact gestures, body language, and photographs. Bruce and Bashinski (2017) revisited the tri-focus framework and its relationship to interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), highlighting augmenting input as one of five key strategies of the framework. In this study, augmenting input is of particular interest because "learners without disabilities hear models of spoken language every day and long before they are expected to express via speech" (Bruce & Bashinski, 2017, p. 172).…”

Augmenting input shifts the balance of communication to forms that a child may eventually use expressively and have helped to increase symbol mastery.…”

“…An IPP/IPCP model facilitates service opportunities for children with disabilities because it allows teams to provide a more consistent implementation plan with all disciplines sharing a more holistic view of the child in the context of his or her family and the community. 4,5 This is particularly important for children with ASD because they have complex needs and families with changing priorities. IPP/IPCP is a natural fit for addressing the needs of children with ASD and their families because it fosters collaboration among professions that leads to a broader understanding of how a child with ASD might communicate across contexts, what environmental factors might influence the child's performance, and where there might be opportunities to capitalize on the strengths and interests of a child with ASD.…”
