Abstract: For many years Luke-Acts has been studied as a work of history and theology. The Trial of the Gospel sets out to examine Luke's writings as an apologetic work, by focusing on those parts of Luke's story where the apologetic overtones seem most prominent - the trial narratives. By analysing the trials of all major Lukan characters - Jesus, Peter, Stephen, and Paul - Alexandru Neagoe argues that the narratives are best understood when viewed as part of Luke's apologia pro evangelio, a purpose which is in keeping… Show more

“…For the most part, we can say that monographs on Luke, Acts or Luke-Acts (typically published dissertations) continue to assume and affirm the significance of the unity of the Lukan volumes (cf., e.g., Korn 1993;Squires 1993;Shepherd 1994;Weatherly 1994;Strauss 1995;Buckwater 1996;Lane 1996;Allen 1997;Cunningham 1997;Denova 1997;Price 1997;Roth 1997;Zwiep 1997;Wasserberg 1998;Bonz 2000;Pao 2000;Wenk 2000;Harms 2001;Hur 2001;Woods 2001;Mount 2002;Nave 2002;Neagoe 2002;Klutz 2004;Mittelstadt 2004;Rothschild 2004;Litwak 2005;Chen 2006). “…Yet in this respect we become somewhat further removed from Luke's intention and estranged from the literary dynamics of the two volumes. Alexandru Neagoe's new study of the 'trial narratives' in Luke-Acts can serve as a final example to illustrate the problem (Neagoe 2002).…”

“…L.T. Johnson has further explored the nature of apologetic as insider rhetoric, which creates and sustains group identity (1992; also Neagoe 2002). G. Gilbert (2002; has focused on Lukan propaganda, which creates Christian identity in light of Roman imperial themes and values, while L. Alexander (1999a) has examined the easy slippage from defense into propaganda, as the narrative would seem to have been most convincing to Christian readers rather than to an imperial Roman audience : My own stress on the epideictic features of Lukan rhetoric also highlights this premise: Acts is much more about insider group dynamics than outsider persuasion (Penner 2000).…”
