The Trends High-Contrast Imaging Survey. I. Three Benchmark M Dwarfs Orbiting Solar-Type Stars

Abstract: We present initial results from a new high-contrast imaging program dedicated to stars that exhibit long-term Doppler radial velocity accelerations (or "trends"). The goal of the TRENDS (TaRgetting bENchmark-objects with Doppler Spectroscopy) imaging survey is to directly detect and study the companions responsible for accelerating their host star. In this first paper of the series, we report the discovery of low-mass stellar companions orbiting HD 53665, HD 68017, and HD 71881 using NIRC2 adaptive optics (AO)… Show more

“…Standard AO imaging reduction methods were used to flatfield the images, correct for bad pixels, and subtract the sky background (Crepp et al 2012). Upon noticing the companions from the NIRC2 automated pipeline, we performed several experiments to confirm their nature, including studying how the signal-to-noise ratio improved with increasing number of processed frames from different detector quadrants.…”

“…The TRENDS (TaRgetting bENchmark-objects with Doppler Spectroscopy) high-contrast imaging program uses precise radial velocity (RV) measurements obtained over a long time baseline to identify promising targets for follow-up observations using adaptive optics (AO; Crepp et al 2012bCrepp et al , 2013. In addition to diffraction-limited imaging, TRENDS also uses coronagraphy, point-spread function (PSF) subtraction, and ≈1 hr integration times to achieve deep contrast at near-infrared wavelengths (Marois et al 2006;Lafrenière et al 2007;Crepp et al 2010).…”

“…It would also be interesting to collect additional RV data to see if there is an RV acceleration caused by the stellar companion. This approach has been fruitful in discovering low mass companions (Crepp et al 2012;Knutson et al 2014). An RV acceleration would further constrain the orbit.…”
