The treatment strategies of autoimmune disease may need a different approach from conventional protocol: A review

Abstract: Autoimmune disease (AD) is one of the emerging noncommunicable diseases. Remission is a possibility in AD, but current treatment strategies are not able to achieve this. We have well-established protocols for infections, oncology, metabolic diseases, and transplantation which are often used as models for the management of AD. Studies and observations suggest that in contrast to diseases used as a role model, AD has wide variability, different causative and pathogenic process, which is highly dynamic, making th… Show more

“…On the other hand, higher end immune suppression is used in case of renal involvement, even if inflammation is low. 10 There are limited immune modulators and anti-inflammatory strategies, and their implications for the management of inflammatory disorders (both of auto-immune nature and auto-inflammatory syndrome) are inadequate. However, studies indicate that the control of inflammation, as one …”

“…More than 80 types of autoimmune disorders have been described thus far and this number continues to increase . Although there is no known cure for ADs, different treatment strategies could be employed to induce disease remission . Besides the replacement therapies for some ADs (eg, autoimmune thyroid disease), the pain and outcome of ADs could be controlled using medications such as corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs and non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs.…”

“…However, these options are associated with severe side‐effects and are not always effective for individuals with refractory diseases. This has led to the emergence of biologics, which target a particular signaling pathway . Although these therapeutic options are revolutionary for ADs, patients show heterogeneity in their treatment response and sometimes experience paradoxical effects.…”
