The Treatment of Incisional Hernia

Abstract: SummaryBackground: A meta-analysis of studies from multiple countries has shown that the incidence of incisional hernia varies from 4% to 10% depending on the type of operation. No epidemiological surveys have been conducted so far. The worst possible complication of an incisional hernia if it is not treated surgically is incarceration. In this article, we present the main surgical methods of treating this condition. We also evaluate the available randomized and controlled trials (RCTs) in which open and lapa… Show more

“…The best surgical technique for a patient has to be decided on an individual basis. [18] In this study, we have noticed spontaneous mesh extrusion through umbilicus rather from scar, which we could not find in any literature we have searched. The most serious complication, though fortunately rare, is the development of enterocutaneous fistula.…”

“…The overall recurrence rate is comparable with those found in literature. In a very recent meta-analysis of studies from multiple countries, after two years from open mesh repair for incisional abdominal hernia, 8 to 12% of patients had developed a recurrence [8], consequently, we are far from the position to speak of surgical cure by mesh. However, recurrence rates after open repair tend to be lower compared to those after laparoscopic surgery [9].…”

“…Although the use of surgical meshes can reduce the recurrence of the incisional hernias, in the long run, due to the use of prosthetic materials, different types of postoperative complications such as chronic pain, abdominal wall infections or entero-cutaneous fistulas may occur. These postoperative complications over time may obscure the prognosis of these patients [10,11].…”
