The transport selection criteria of Norwegian exporters

Abstract: Examines transport selection criteria with particular reference to Norwegian exports. Because results of studies of carrier selection determinants tend to have a degree of consensus, there is a risk of assuming context‐free determinants, whereas throughout the world there is a range of contexts that may influence determinants. Norway has distinctive features including export dependency with a small home market, a peripheral location, and an extreme topography and climate. Despite an awareness of logistics conc… Show more

“…Although firms have been internationalised (Anjum et al , 2024), small and inexperienced exporting firms typically want the buyer to handle all the logistics costs, as well as the major risks and obligations. Loetveit Pedersen and Gray (1998) confirmed the relation between firm size and Incoterms selection. Larger firms tend to handle more delivery procedures to serve their important markers.…”

“…Transportation cost appears to be one of the most significant factors since changes in the mode of transportation, types of goods and distance may significantly impact the level of risks and efficiency of the parties (Cung et al , 2022). Moreover, transportation costs may vary depending on factors like location, transport distances and limited domestic competition (Loetveit Pedersen and Gray, 1998). The effects of distance in selecting Incoterms have also been confirmed by del Rosal (2013).…”

“…The higher costs can be partially explained by factors such as topography, location, transport distances and limited domestic competition. One survey shows that even for exporters with products with a high value-toweight ratio, only about 50 per cent of them rate timing factors as more important than transport price actors [8].…”

“…Based on the selection mode by Slater (2007) [14], it was carried out a transport mode selection framework for international distribution by authors (Figure 1). Generally, the option of each transport mode need to identify the features of mode, such as the service-, the price-, the timing respect and the transport security [8]. The option of the mode is determined numerous factors for the international distribution.…”
