“…This type of homophobia targets sexual minorities in their own inner circles, including their own family members, relatives, friends, and colleagues (Schulman, 2009). This type of homophobia is not unique to Japan, as has been documented in a number of empirical studies by Western scholars (e.g., D'Amico & Julien, 2012; Svab & Kuhar, 2014;Willoughby, Doty, & Malik, 2010). However, because of the centrality of family in Japanese society, the Japanese family is the context where negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality are most often expressed and internalized.…”

“…Coming out of the closet does not always bring GLBT children out of the closet. Slovenian sociologists Svab and Kuhar (2014), through an analysis of the process of negotiating new family relations following coming out to the family of origin, explained the "family closet" as "a situation within the family of origin where family members are put into the closet in relation to the broader kinship network, neighbors, friends and acquaintances, colleagues from work, and other social and community contexts" (pp. 19-20).…”
