ABSTRACT:Parenthood is among the developmental transitions that set major challenges for contemporary families. When there is a twin pregnancy, those challenges increase. Our aims in this study are understanding the parental experience in families with twins and identifying the factors which condition parental experience in such families. It is a literature review focusing on studies published between 2000 and 2012 based on reference data. The articles were analyzed considering the aims, participants, phases of data collection, tools used; and results achieved regarding the dimensions involved in parenting experiences faced by parents of twins. In the 19 studies identified, maternity was the main focus of research. Women with twin children showed lower scores on well-being, higher stress risks, exhaustion and depression. The experience of these families was different, more demanding and complex than singletons' parents. Understanding of this matter becomes crucial to contributing to better health for families. LA FAMILIA EN LA PERSPECTIVA GEMELAR -UNA REVISIÓN SISTEMÁTICA RESUMEN: La paternidad es una de las transiciones del desarrollo que plantea más desafíos a la familia contemporánea. En un embarazo gemelar estos retos son engrandecidos. Los objetivos del estudio fueron conocer la experiencia de la paternidad en familias con gemelos y analizar los factores que influyen en sus experiencias de paternidad. Para este propósito se analizaron artículos publicados entre 2000-2012 en bases de datos referencia. Los artículos fueron analizados teniendo en cuenta: objetivos, participantes, tiempo de recolección de datos, instrumentos utilizados y los resultados, atendiendo las variables que integran la experiencia de paternidad gemelar. En los 19 estudios identificados, la maternidad era el foco central de investigación. Las mujeres con gemelos han tenido resultados más bajos de bienestar, aumentando el riesgo de estrés, agotamiento y depresión. La experiencia de las familias fue diferente, más exigente y compleja que para otros padres. Comprender el tema es fundamental para maximizar la salud de la familia. DESCRIPTORS:

Becoming a father is a life changing event and this transition is associated with various emotions. Educational activities aimed at new parents are important in healthcare parental support (HCPS). HCPS has been critiqued for its predominant focus on mothers, while the needs of fathers seem to have been downplayed. As a result, fathers often turn to Internet-based forums for support. As virtual discussions and mutual support among fathers take place in cyberspace, it is important to monitor these forums to observe the ways in which the fathers discuss HCPS. The aim of this study is to explore the ways in which new fathers visiting an Internet-based forum for fathers communicated their experiences of HCPS. A netnographic method consisting of six steps was used to gather and analyse the data. The findings show that fathers shared with one another their experiences of the attitudes expressed by HCPS workers as well as their own attitudes towards HCPS. The attitudes of HCPS workers that were directed towards the fathers were perceived as highly personal and individual, while fathers described their attitudes towards the HCPS in general terms, towards HCPS as a system. Overall, the fathers described HCPS as a valuable confirmatory support that eased their worries concerning sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), colic, weight gain, fever and teething. Although the fathers expressed gratitude towards HCPS, they also shared their negative experiences, such as feeling invisible, disregarded and insulted. In fact, the twofold attitudes that exist in the relationship between the fathers and HCPS can act as a barrier rather than being a confirmatory support. We recommend that HCPS adopts a broader approach using more targeted and strategic didactic methods for supporting fathers in the growth of their own personal awareness, as such an approach would offer a competitive and professional alternative to the support offered in informal experience-based Internet forums.

Objective: this study aimed to identify priority needs and concerns expressed by fathers in the performance of their role in three stages of the life cycle: adolescence, productive age, and mature age. Methodology: this is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted with fourteen fathers residing in a municipality in the extreme south of Brazil. The data were collected between May and August 2011 by means of the in-depth interview. Through the technique of written discourse analysis and the array built upon Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory, we obtained three categories: fathers' needs/concerns, generated in their relationship with the world of work; needs/concerns that emerged from the relationship of care with the children; and fathers' concerns about the future of the children. Conclusions: we identified that the concern with the future of the children was pointed out by fathers of all age groups investigated. Key words: Nursing; Paternity; Parent-Child Relationship. RESUMENObjetivo: identificar las necesidades y preocupaciones prioritarias, manifestadas por los padres en el desempeño de su función, en tres etapas del ciclo de vida: adolescencia, edad productiva y edad madura. Metodología: estudio exploratorio con abordaje cualitativo, desarrollado con catorce padres residentes en un municipio en el extremo sur de Brasil. Los datos fueran colectados entre mayo y agosto de 2011, a través de entrevistas en profundidad. A través de la técnica de análisis textual y discursiva e de la matriz construida basada en la teoria bioecologica de Bronfenbrenner, fueran construidas tres categorías: Necesidades/ preocupaciones de lo padre, generado en suya relación con el mundo de lo trabajo; Necesidades/preocupaciones que emergen de la relación de cuidado con hijos e preocupaciones de los padres con lo futuro de los hijos.
