“…Regional innovation systems have been recognised as a vital approach for regions looking to achieve economic growth and entrepreneurship development (Muscio and Ciffolilli, 2020; Sandulli et al, 2021). However, the majority of the existing studies on regional innovation systems place emphasis on improving innovation performance, determinants of regional innovation systems success, role of institutional learning and importance of collaboration and intermediaries in the regional innovation system (Looy et al, 2003; Buesa et al, 2006; Clarysse et al, 2014; Lau and Lo, 2015; Höglund and Linton, 2018; McAdam and Debackere, 2018; Muscio and Ciffolilli, 2020; Sandulli et al, 2021). The examination of the aforesaid literature – conceptually clustered in Table 1 below – highlights that there is a need to understand the potential of innovation ecosystems operating as boundary organisations for capturing value from Industry 4.0 in a regional context.…”

“…The examination of the aforesaid literatureconceptually clustered in Table 1 below -highlights that there is a need to understand the potential of innovation ecosystems operating as boundary organisations for capturing value from Industry 4.0 in a regional context. The existing research on regional innovation systems and boundary organisations (as mapped in Table 1) has made significant contribution to confirm empirically the importance of openness and smart specialisation strategies for: enhancing innovative performance (Belussi et al, 2010;Carayannis et al, 2018;Höglund and Linton, 2018;McAdam and Debackere, 2018); explaining the mechanisms by which organisations interact with the regional innovation system in order to enhance innovation performance (Lau and Lo, 2015); recognising research collaboration and international networks as crucial elements for the advancement of regional innovation systems (Lew et al, 2018); exploring the transition of regional innovation systems into the global innovation hubs (Malik et al, 2021); illustrating the transformation of regional innovation systems into industry 4.0 innovation hubs (Sandulli et al, 2021); and confirming the significant role of regional production and innovation environment on regional innovation capacity (Buesa et al, 2006).…”

“…Here, elements that are relevant for green path renewal are also relevant for innovation. For example, skills, knowledge and infrastructure, sometimes referred to as hard elements of the RISs, are as relevant as other soft elements such as informal institutions that facilitate collaboration (Sandulli, Gimenez-Fernandez, and Rodriguez Ferradas 2021).…”

“…Among the organizations that risk suffering the impact of a crisis, a category particularly worthy of attention is that of start-up companies. Various studies have addressed the role of start-ups as key players for growth (Rigtering and Behrens 2021 ; Sandulli et al 2021 ; Kim and Lee 2022 ), acting as an essential driver for the economic sustainability of regional systems (Bresciani et al 2021 ; Fernandes and Ferreira 2022 ). Start-ups, in other contexts are referred to as high-tech entrepreneurial ventures; in some cases overlapping with innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) or young tech ventures (Kraus et al 2019 ), they are fragile by their nature due to their small size (Gimenez-Fernandez et al 2020 ).…”
