The Traditional Medicinal Plants Cuphea calophylla, Tibouchina kingii, and Pseudelephantopus spiralis Attenuate Inflammatory and Oxidative Mediators

Abstract: Aerial parts of Cuphea calophylla, Tibouchina kingii, and Pseudelephantopus spiralis have been used in Colombian traditional medicine for inflammation. However, the underlying mechanisms that could explain the anti-inflammatory actions remain unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects of hydroalcoholic extracts from C. calophylla (HECC), T. kingii (HETK), and P. spiralis (HEPS) in LPS-stimulated THP-1 macrophages. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), an… Show more

“…Plants—as a source of bioactive components—are frequently consumed in nutrition and have been used as traditional medicines for generations, where they are still used in form of classical extracts such as infusion, decoction or maceration in aqueous media [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. To use their nonsoluble active compounds in pharmaceutical and personal-care products, their extracts are usually prepared using organic solvents due to their constituents’ low solubility in aqueous media [ 12 ].…”

“…As mentioned above, Cuphea s are rich in polyphenols that are well-known natural antioxidants [ 27 ]. For this reason, many studies have focused on the in vitro antioxidant activity of Cuphea plants [ 16 , 17 , 48 , 52 , 63 , 92 , 103 ]. The results of these studies are presented in Table 4 .…”
