The Toxicity Phenomenon and the Related Occurrence in Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: A Brief Review From the Biomedical Perspective

Abstract: Thousands of different nanoparticles (NPs) involve in our daily life with various origins from food, cosmetics, drugs, etc. It is believed that decreasing the size of materials up to nanometer levels can facilitate their unfavorable absorption since they can pass the natural barriers of live tissues and organs even, they can go across the relatively impermeable membranes. The interaction of these NPs with the biological environment disturbs the natural functions of cells and its components and cause health iss… Show more

“…The issue of cytotoxicity of Ag NPs still needs further studies since it depends on lots of factors, including the shape of NPs, dimension, concentration, etc. ( Attarilar et al, 2020 ), since high concentration of Ag NPs may be cytotoxic. Moreover, some other studies demonstrated the influence of NPs’ size on cytotoxicity.…”

“…PERK, IRE1 α, and ATF6 are ER membrane proteins, which are known to form complexes with BiP in a steady-state condition. The increased demand for protein folding leads to activation of PERK, IRE1 α, and ATF6, subsequently activating their downstream influencers to alleviate protein toxic stress on ER and restore ER homeostasis[ 25 , 26 ]. In this regard, HA15 can bind to the ATP enzyme of BiP and inhibit its activity, leading to BiP separation from PERK, IRE1 α, and ATF6 that elicits ER stress and UPR[ 27 ].…”

“…AuNPs can be delivered through intravenous injection of free AuNPs or implantation with a combination of scaffolds ( Blanco et al, 2015 ; Li et al, 2018 ; Wang et al, 2018 , 2019b ). Intravenous injection of free AuNPs has the problems of immunological clearance by host responses and unexpected accumulation in healthy tissues and organs ( Attarilar et al, 2020 ). Recently, implantation of composite scaffolds of nanoparticles and biocompatible polymers or bioceramics has been reported to directly deliver PTT nanoparticles to the cancer tissues or the resected sites ( Eivazzadeh-Keihan et al, 2019 ; Luo et al, 2019 ; Chen et al, 2020 ).…”
