The total‐to‐selective extinction ratio determined from near IR photometry of OB stars

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents an extensive list of the total to selective extinction ratios R calculated from the infrared magnitudes of 597 O and B stars using the extrapolation method. The IR magnitudes of these stars were taken from the literature. The IR colour excesses are determined with the aid of "artificial standards" -Wegner (1994). The individual and mean values of total to selective extinction ratios R differ in most cases from the average value R=3.10 ±0. 05 -Wegner (1993) in different OB associa… Show more

“…+20 −1 (H i opacity)] × 10 20 cm −2 mag −1 . Assuming a standard total-to-selective extinction ratio R V = A V /E(B − V) = 3.10 (Wegner 2003), the dust-to-gas ratio just estimated appears to be ∼50% higher than the average value in the diffuse ISM, N(H)/E(B − V) = 58 × 10 20 cm −2 mag −1 (Bohlin et al 1978), and a factor of three higher than what is inferred for the dark phase in local clouds from γ-ray measurements, N(H)/E(B − V) 30 × 10 20 cm −2 mag −1 (Grenier et al 2005;Abdo et al 2010f). The discrepancy is confirmed by the extinction data.…”
