The total-factor energy productivity growth of China’s construction industry: evidence from the regional level

Abstract: This study uses the total-factor energy productivity change index (TFEPCH) to investigate the changes in energy productivity of construction industry for 30 provincial regions in China from 2006 to 2015, adopting the improved Luenberger productivity index combined with the directional distance function. In addition to traditional economic output indicator, this study introduces building floor space under construction as a physical output indicator for energy productivity evaluation. The TFEPCH was decomposed i… Show more

“…The DDFM approach was put forward by Chung et al (1997), which allows proportional expansion of desirable outputs and shrinking of undesirable outputs and inputs [41]. Some scholars attempted to apply these models to calculate the carbon emissions efficiency [45,46].…”

“…The DDF has the following properties corresponding to those of the PPS. The above properties can be translated into positivity (9), monotonicity in desirable output (10), monotonicity in undesirable output (11), weak disposability of outputs (12), translation (13), and concavity (14). These properties are well described in F€ are et al 24 The translation property shown in equation ( 13) is important.…”

“…c. MAC is opportunity costs for which some of electricity generation is foregone in suppressing byproduct. 8 d. Some studies, such as Huo et al 13 , investigated technical progress and efficiency change decomposing the total-factor energy productivity. e. Other related studies on measurement of technical (in)efficiency and MAC are summarized in Lee and Zhou.…”

“…In addition to the historical BEC data, the historical building floor space (BFS) is also an important factor for people to understand the actual energy consumption in the building sector (Huo et al, 2018a;Huo et al, 2018b). The building stock plays a significant role in actual energy savings calculation, energy consumption prediction, and carbon emission projection (Liu et al, 2017).…”
