The Total Carbon Column Observing Network's GGG2020 Data Version

Joshua L. Laughner,
Geoffrey C. Toon,
Joseph Mendonca
et al.

Abstract: Abstract. The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) measures column-average mole fractions of several greenhouse gases (GHGs) beginning in 2004 from over 30 current or past measurement sites around the world, using solar absorption spectroscopy in the near infrared region. TCCON GHG data have been used extensively for multiple purposes, including in studies of the carbon cycle and anthropogenic emissions as well as to validate and improve observations made from spacebased sensors. Here, we describe an … Show more

“…Using the retrieved O 2 column can reduce common uncertainties, such as instrument and light path errors [10,25]. The uncertainty of TCCON XCO 2 is proved to be below 0.15% (~0.6 ppm) [29], and the TCCON CO 2 retrievals have good sensitivity in the troposphere (Figure 4c).…”

“…The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) is a globally ground-based network of Fourier transform spectrometers that records NIR solar absorption spectra, crucial for validating space-based XCO 2 estimates (Laughner et al, 2023;Wunch et al, 2011Wunch et al, , 2017. In this study, we used the latest TCCON GGG2020 data (Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) Team, 2022) from 24 stations spanning 2009-2020 (Table S2 in Supporting Information S1).…”

“…As a technical quantity it is created to deliver a value near unity for a spectrometer correctly set up and aligned. According to Laughner et al (2023b) for the TCCON the expected value is 0.999 due to imperfections in the O 2 spectroscopy.…”
