The top 27 animal alien species introduced into Europe for aquaculture and related activities

Abstract: Summary The information extracted from IMPASSE, DAISIE, FishBase, and FAO‐DIAS inventories of alien species were used to draw a list of the 27 most utilized animal alien species for aquaculture and related activities (e.g. stocking, sport fishing, ornamental purposes) in Europe. Three variables have been considered to assess their negative ecological impacts when these species escape from aquaculture facilities: (i) their distribution across Europe (including non‐EU Member States); (ii) evidence of their envir… Show more

“…In marine systems, maritime traffic and aquaculture perpetuate biological introduction processes at global and regional scales (Minchin, 2007a; Molnar, Gamboa, Revenga, & Spalding, 2008; Nunes, Katsanevakis, Zenetos, & Cardoso, 2014; Savini et al., 2010). Marinas form dense networks along the coasts and host diverse and abundant NIS taxa (e.g., sessile NIS in marinas of the Celtic Sea, Bishop, Wood, Lévêque, Yunnie, & Viard, 2015; Minchin, 2007b).…”

“…The negative ecological impacts vary highly depending on the species involved, community structure and abiotic environmental conditions (Savini et al 2010;Henriksson 2016 a, b). For the majority of non-native species, no quantitative information is available regarding the consequences of such introductions (Simberloff et al 2013).…”

“…These factors are significantly altered to food security policy [47,48] and abundance [49][50][51][52]. Non-native fishes are also changed selectivity of gear due to nature, dwelling behaviour and ecological condition [53][54][55]. Non-native fishes are helping for homogenization of faunas, increasing of diversity [56,57] and create pressure for native species [58][59][60].…”
