The Top 100 Most-Cited Papers in Erosive Tooth Wear: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract: Citation rates can be used as an indicator of the influence and relevance of scientific papers. The present study analyzed the 100 most-cited articles related to erosive tooth wear (ETW). The top 100 most-cited papers focusing on ETW topics were collected from the Web of Science database on November 11th, 2020. The following bibliometric data were extracted from papers: title, authorship, institutions, countries, number of citations, year of publication, journal title, study design, topic, and keywords. Scopus… Show more

“…This result seems to be more related to the quality of the institutions and researchers rather than the number of countries that comprise the continent [Baldiotti et al, 2021]. This finding agrees with data described in other bibliometric studies in dentistry [Baldiotti et al, 2021;Rocha et al, 2022]. The University of Umea in Sweden was the outstanding institution in the top 100 most-cited papers.…”

“…The oldest paper was published in 1977 [Murray et al, 1977], but the 100 mostcited papers were mainly published in the 2000s (Table 1). Since fluoride varnish is considered a non-invasive treatment, it is especially useful for arresting dental caries [Marinho et al, 2013], reducing the dissolution of dental hard tissue in erosive tooth wear [Rocha et al, 2022], and obliterating dentin tubes in dentin hypersensitivity [Ritter et al, 2006;Alam et al, 2021].…”

“…In the bibliometric field, WoS-CC, designed with an emphasis on citation analysis, is considered one of the most prestigious databases for examining scientific quality and impact [Ionescu et al, 2021]. Therefore, studies involving bibliometric analysis often use WoS as the primary database [Baldiotti et al, 2021;Rocha et al, 2022]. Scopus has the limitation of measuring citations in a shorter period, beginning in 1996.…”

“…In dentistry, non-carious dental conditions, including DF, are the subject of extensive research and growing concern for dentists worldwide [Wondwossen et al, 2004;Freitas et al, 2013;Martignon et al, 2021]. The literature has bibliometric studies involving other non-carious dental alterations such as erosive tooth wear and molar incisor hypomineralization [Da Costa et al, 2021;Rocha et al, 2022]. However, bibliometric analyses specifically targeting DF without restrictions on years and location were not identified [Forero et al, 2018;Ullah et al, 2019;Waghmare et al, 2021].…”
