The Timing of Parental Unemployment, Insurance, and Children's Education

Abstract: It is not unusual for children to have a parent who faces unemployment at one time or another. Such timing, particularly within the school year, might obstacle children’s educational transitions. We further theorise and test how unemployment’s timing effects vary depending on private and public insurance mechanisms, respectively parental wealth and unemployment benefits. We rely on administrative data from the Netherlands, a country with a stratified educational system and wide wealth disparities, on cohorts of… Show more

“…We now investigate potential channels through which parental job loss may a ect child's education depending on the childhood stage at plant closure. We have mentioned in the previous section how heterogeneous impacts on children exposed in adolescence are consistent with the hypothesis that displacement-related stress a ects exam performance, as suggested by several studies (e.g., Carneiro et al 2022;Mari et al 2022;Stans 2022). Since we do not observe direct measures of stress or other related health outcomes, we focus here on two additional channels that have been invoked to explain intergenerational impacts of parental shocks.…”

“…While recent studies have focused on the timing of parental job loss with respect to important junctures such as school track choice or labor market entry (Fradkin et al, 2019;Schmidpeter, 2020;Mari et al, 2022), there is little evidence on di erential impacts by the age at which a child is exposed.…”
