“…In addition, recent studies have reported trends in decreasing incidence of Alzheimer disease and other cognitive impairments since the late twentieth century, and researchers suggest that this results from increasing level of education and decreasing prevalence of cardiovascular comorbidities [53][54][55][56][57]. We also speculate that the introduction of anti-herpetic medications, for example, acyclovir [58], since the 1980s, could also contribute to this trend by decreasing the risk of dementia in HSV-infected patients.…”

“…The 1998 and 2000 waves only interviewed people in the oldest age group who were 80 years old and above. Since 2002, adults aged 60‐79 years old were also added to the survey 5 . As a mixed longitudinal study, the CLHLS recruited approximately one third of the subjects in each wave from those in the previous wave, while recruiting new subjects to match those lost to follow up in terms of age, gender and education.…”

“…The results were very similar when the mean assignment was assessed to address missing data. 13,14 Valid samples that could be analysed, considering the integrity of the data collection, included 38 312 individuals from 58 945 observations. The total number of participants aged 80 years and older in the CLHLS was 8756, 10 986, 10 922, 10 606, 12 237 and 5368 for each survey year in 1998, 2000,2002,2005,2008 and 2012, respectively.…”
