The time course of the effects of central and peripheral cues on visual processing: an event-related potentials study

Abstract: These results suggest that the automatic attraction of attention by a peripheral cue results in improved sensory processing at the cued location. This facilitation is replaced by an inhibitory effect when SOA increases, although cue informativeness may modulate this effect. Central cueing does not affect sensory processing at the P1 level.

“…In Experiment 1, exogenous cues were used that are considered to cause automatic attention shifts (Klein, 2004;Marzouki et al, 2007). However, it is often argued that exogenous cues may also induce endogenous control to some extent when they are informative (Doallo et al, 2004;Müller & Rabbitt, 1989;Wright & Richard, 2000). The aim of Experiment 4 was to test whether a texture advantage is also observed without endogenous control being involved.…”

“…However, since the magnitude of the cueing effect increases also with increasing informativeness of a peripheral cue, it has been argued that an endogenous component may be involved in exogenous cueing as well (Doallo et al, 2004;Müller & Rabbitt, 1989;Wright & Richard, 2000).…”

“…Statistical analyses were performed on the mean voltages at various intervals of interest in the ERP waveform similar to those identified previously (van Hooff et al, 2008;Pérez-Edgar and Fox, 2003): P1, N1, and P3. The minimal 20 segments per condition were considered necessary for inclusion into the Grand Average (van Hooff et al, 2008;Doalloa et al, 2004), 17 participants of each group satisfied this threshold.…”
